Universities trust us to teach students how to go Freelance

Our Marketing Mavericks programme has been shaping the future for hundreds of new business start-ups since 2020.

Vic Taylor has an alternative pathway for Graduates

Upon graduation in 2005, Vic didn’t know that going self-employed was an option and after 10 years of industry experience, she accidentally became a Marketing Freelancer.

‘Only 2% of freelancers felt they learned about self-employment at University’ ComRes.

During covid, Vic noticed that Graduates were struggling to get into relevant careers (due to furlough) so she created the Marketing Mavericks programme to give students another viable option.

Universities noticed the positive impact on Graduates who chose the route to self-employment and have embedded the programme into the curriculum.

87% of students found freelancing a highly attractive career option - University of Oxford.

The common theme we hear from students is they don’t have an awareness that they CAN begin today and they don’t know WHERE to find trusted guidance to technically set up a business. We’re able to support:

  • Students who tell us they really want to build in confidence and take control of their careers
  • Neurodiverse students who tell us the ‘9-5’ hustle and bustle can be over stimulating
  • Disabled students who tell us they’d like the power to work from home when they need to
  • Mature students who tell us they are  juggling a family and need a ‘side hustle’ that works for them right now

Frequently Asked Questions

Which year of University does the programme suit?

We have worked with 1st years, 2nd years and final year students, plus post-graduate students to help them to determine if self-employment is for them.

Naturally, the older they are, the more they’ve developed through their degree content, however, we’ve seen awesome successes with 1st year students who set up in business straight away and don’t need to have a job serving coffee or stacking shelves throughout their degrees.

Generally, we recommend a 2 month timeframe for Stages 1 and 2 delivery and support, with 3 live sessions (beginning, middle and end) and full access to the online course material. We can work alongside you to create a bespoke course length, eg for a ‘Year in Enterprise’ we can start in October and run through to April.

We have supported Students to set up as:

  • Social media marketing manager
  • Website designer
  • Influencer
  • Copywriter
  • Photographer
  • Charity Events Manager
  • Videographer
  • Graphic Designer
  • Email marketing manager
  • Illustrator
  • PR Manager
  • Brand/logo Designer

We cater for students who are studying Business courses, Art and Design courses, and Humanities, so that they can explore/build a business in any areas that come under the ‘marketing’ umbrella.

What if some Students can’t make the times of the live sessions? Is there a replay?

Yes, we always provide a replay of live sessions for the cohort to watch back. It’s kept within their online portal and available until the end of the programme to watch back.

Yes, we can provide you with a % figure on a weekly basis to confirm how many students are engaging. This is important as you might choose to send an email from the University with a more formal ‘nudge’ to encourage them to engage with the programme.

Since 2020, we’ve been running Marketing Mavericks and every student has confirmed that this was beneficial to access the information.

Whether you choose to put 10 or 500 students through the Marketing Mavericks programme, there will 3 outcomes:

  1. Students who set up in business immediately
  2. Students will say that’s great to know but they want to experience being employed first
  3. Students who say this has taught them that self-employment isn’t for them – but they’re glad they explored it and know they can rule it out.

We do have a Plan B in place to make your budget get the results. Let’s say you have 50 Students who indicate an interest for the Marketing Mavericks programme, but after 2 weeks only 40 have signed up and started the course. We can give the other 10 a notice period to engage and if they don’t, we open up those spaces to fresh students.
